Desktop utilization is about having the most room possible for what your working on, but also having quick access to another part of the computer.

    1. Remove extra panels
Why? One is more than enough
How? Take all your menus, shortcuts, clock, and backround apps and move them onto one panel. If you don't use the icon everytime your on the computer, you don't need it on the panel

    2. Deskbar
Why? search anything on the computer in seconds. Everything can be launched with it.
Tips: under Deskbar preferences, Check only the boxes you plan to use. Also move what you search most to the top. I have
    1. Programs
    2. recent documents
    3.bookmarks
    4. Deskbar search history
    5. internet history search
    6. Dictionary
    I unchecked the rest

for fun: Set Deskbar to an easy keybourd shortcut under deskbar preferences. I used super(window) and enter
Remove all icons and menus from the desktop. Search everything!

    3. Make specific use of virtual desktops
Why? To much stuff on one desktop clutters your work. What you were working on first is now in the back.
Tips: I put my music on 1, Browser on 2, tomboy notes and office apps on 3 and number 4 for misc.

    4. Keybourd Shortcuts
Why? the keyboard is faster than the mouse
How? under ubuntu click system setting (keyboard shortcuts)
    Control i = internet browser
    F1 = help
    Control h = Home folder
    Control Alt T = Run a terminal

basically if you open something all the time it should have a keyboard shortcut

    All-in-one Guestures in firefox
Why? Simply drawing lines with a mouse to do simple actions. Example holding the right key on the mouse draging to left goes back a page, meanwhile going right goes forward. There are many more.
    How?
    go here
    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/12
    click install now
    restart browser
in firefox click (tools) then (add-ons) click on all-in-one guestures and goto preferences. Customize to your liking

Please add your favorates and/or send a screen shot of your desktop

On supported systems one should not underestimate the value of the scale plugin for Compiz, it really helps with managing lot of windows easily.

    - tilda/yakuake, its really nice to have a terminal open that you can show/hide with F2 (tilda also uses tabs, dunno about yukuake)
    - Use an auto hide panel for apps that you use a lot
i know this goes against what hammerandbank said but i personally like to have my most-used apps in a auto-hide panel at the bottom of my screen
    - Bookmarks in nautilus/thunar/whatever, this is really big for me, i can switch sites in just one click, no more browsing the fs
    - Hide some apps to the system tray, for instance, i leave rhythmbox running in the tray most of the time, is out of my way and if i need to fe skip a song i only have to click on the icon, not go to another desktop or alt+tab
    - Use tabs in... everything, for me tabs is a magic word, gedit, xchat, firefox, terminals all with tabs, and to switch i just have to press *number of tab*

    Thats about all

On panels. This is where I like KDE. I alter the default so that panels are thinner then transfer regularly needed stuff* down to a bottom bar (applets, time and task bar). Then a top bar is created and holds all the launchers and various other tools that are needed occasionally. Then I simply tell that top bar to hide itself when the mouse isn't over it freeing that real estate for development. Works quite well, better than I thought it would.

It's kind of like GNOME except done a little more sanely for my tastes. I'm not sure you can hide panels in GNOME in such a way which highlights the sort of thing Linus was complaining about.

*i.e. things you need to see at a glance.

I am too impatient to wait for auto hidden panels

Me too... It bothers me... I just shrink stuff down. Makes everything fit.
